Sorbitol is a white, odorless crystalline substance with a sweet and delicate taste. It comes in powder form. It is approximately 40% less sweet than sugar and has a lower caloric value. Sorbitol does not lose its properties even when it comes in contact with heat or when it is cooked, and it maintains long shelf life of products. Due to those properties, it is widely used in food industry as a sweetener. E420 marked sorbitol is used in ice creams, beverages, chewing gum, mouthwash, jams etc. In cosmetics industry it is added to creams, ointments, shampoos and toothpastes.
